Well, it's coming up to that time again. A New Year ahead and all thoughts turn to how we can do better, make a real difference and enjoy life to the full. For some, a New Year signals a new start. Resolutions are made and January starts with all good intentions. But we all know - from experience - that some of the promises and resolutions we make soon bite the dust. As I see it, resolutions fail because we don't fully connect with the commitment we've made or because we set ourselves unrealistic goals. It's usually the latter that creates the most problems. When we set ourselves impossible targets, the pressure of keeping up with the commitment can become far too much to bear. Inevitably, the resolution fails to materialize. So for this New Year, keep the big ambition in sight, but set yourself smaller, manageable goals. Let me give you an example. Perhaps you want to lose 20lbs in weight. Rather than focusing on the 20lbs, aim instead to lose a couple of pounds per week or fortnight. Work out a doable plan of action for doing just that. Even allow for a motivational treat every week to keep you on target. This really does work! Before you know it, you'll have reached your main goal of losing 20lbs. (Read this article for more: http://www.karlblog.com/2008/10/power-of-small-consistent-steps.html) Give it a go! And whatever promises you make for the New Year, don't forget to have fun as you go along. May I wish you a joyful and beautiful New Year! I hope it is full of love, adventure and brilliant times ahead. Labels: christmas, inspiration, self-development
Happy New Year to you! :) I hope that the prospect of 2009 fills you with hope - and that you say "Yes!" to everything it throws your way. Well - it's New Year's Eve. And as another year draws to a close, it never fails to surprise me just how many people genuinely dislike this time of year. They're glum. Disappointed with life. Wanting to tuck into bed by 11.45pm. Yet it should be a time for celebrating. We've survived another 365 days on this roller coaster of a journey we call life. Think about it. What did you do this year? Fall in love? Expand your business? Grow old gracefully? Rocket your social circle? Create your own blog? None of the above? All of the above? This may have been a "bad" year for you. Or it may have been a "good" year. But the one thing I always draw from December 31st... the one thing that always leaves me looking forward to the coming year... ... Is that distinctly human quality: hope. Hope that things will get better. Hope that we'll improve. Hope for happy moments and increased knowledge. Hope for change. For me, at least, that's what makes this time of year special. The knowledge that change is upon us - and that it's a great time to start afresh. Diarist James Agate said: "We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day." What would YOU like to change in your life over the coming 12 months? HAPPY NEW YEAR! :) (Can't see the above video? This is a random blog post.
Unlike most of my messages, it has no real theme.
Today's post is partially a Monday Random Act of Kindness, partially a message of inspiration, partially a greeting for the holidays, and wholly a big dollop of love.
Why?
Because Christmas is here. It's the time for you to open your heart and embrace the world around you.
You see, anyone that knows me... knows one thing.
I love this time of year!
It's magical. People everywhere -- at least those not caught in the crazed, ever-busy last-minute gift rush -- open their hearts and become just a little more loving.
It's the time we can officially be jovial and say "I LOVE YOU!" without feeling like an idiot.
It's rationed happiness.
Of course, you could be like that all year round -- and feel great as a result. But if you don't, AT LEAST do it for Christmas, and live every minute of the holidays to the full!
So, what can you do to get into the Christmas spirit?
Well, Random Acts of Kindness are a fantastic way to start!
They're small acts of kindness, done for the good of some stranger, solely for the purpose of making their like more joyful -- without expecting anything in return!
http://www.karlblog.com/blog/labels/random%20acts%20of%20kindness.html
Let me give you some examples.
This week, my mother donated much of her wages to abandoned cat and dog charities here in the North East of England. (And my mum has a lot of big bills to pay!)
On Saturday, I helped an elderly man overloaded with bags up the steep hill to Durham train station.
Last night, I gave a surprise visit to an elderly friend -- and decorated his otherwise-Christmas-free house with bright tinsel and wreaths and "Merry Christmas!" signs. They cost me £7 in total, and changed his mindset completely!
Those are just a few festive Random Act's of Kindness you can use to change someone else's life -- and make yourself feel great at the same time.
A Random Act of Kindness is, after all, simply an act of love.
And what is Christmas if not love?
Before signing off today, I'd like to give you a couple of quick Christmas gifts.
Firstly, if you haven't yet downloaded the Karl Blog.com Christmas screensaver, then click here to learn more and download your copy for free.
Secondly, I've prepared an official greetings card just for YOU!
Please... I'd like you to ask that you take two seconds out to visit the following site and listen to my message...
I guarantee it'll pep up your day.
And so, as this glorious day slowly retires and the sound of sleighbells gently ring in the distance, allow me to wish you... a very, very merry Christmas!
With love, with happiness, with a big smile and wide pupils... I wish you all the very, very best.
:)

My dear friends...
MERRY CHRISTMAS!! Froehliche Weihnachten! Mele Kalikimaka! Sung Tan Chuk Ha! God Jul! Feliz Navidad! Nadolig Llawen! Feliz Natal! Buone Feste Natalizie! Joyeux Noel! Yes, there are many ways to say Christmas. And what does it all really mean? Well -- to me, at least -- Christmas means LOVE.Dale Evans said it best with: "Every time we love, every time we give, it's Christmas." Bob Hope backed her up, with: "My idea of Christmas, whether old-fashioned or modern, is very simple: loving others. Come to think of it, why do we have to wait for Christmas to do that?" Today, many hundreds of thousands of individuals across our great blue planet are celebrating. It's a great feeling. And why should it stop here?Speaking through the mouth of character Scrooge, Charles Dickens wrote in A Christmas Carol: "I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year." And if Scrooge can do it, everyone can! Remember this moment... and let's keep the love alive!
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL!
... AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT! :)

Ladies and gentleman...
It's CHRISTMAS EVE!!
No matter where you live in the world, and no matter how you celebrate this time of the year, I'd like to offer you my very deepest, warmest wishes for the season.
And I'd like to brighten your day with a few interesting facts about this time of year...
For a start, did you know that Christmas was once ILLEGAL?
No kidding. In 1647, Oliver Cromwell and the British parliament passed a law making all Christmas celebrations illegal. It was considered that feasting on a holy day was immoral. The ban was lifted thirteen years later, in 1660.
But Christmas wasn't even celebrated until the year 440 AD. And it took a long time before it became the holiday period was love and celebrate today.
Take Christmas lights, for example.
For me, lights on a tree are synonymous with Christmas. But who actually came up with the idea?
Well, Thomas Edison invented the light bulb back in 1879. It was just three short years later that Edward Johnson, Edison's assistant, decided to put lights onto a tree for public demonstration. The display was a massive hit... and within a few short years, DIY kits were made available to the public.
But of course, those bulbs were all pretty big.
The whole idea behind a string of small electric bulbs that you wrap around the tree -- similar to the ones we use today -- came back in 1895, from a man named Ralph Morris.
Morris was an American telephone engineer, who had originally invented the lights for use in telephone switchboards. He suddenly had the idea of wrapping them around his tree. The concept took off - and within a couple of years, they were everywhere!
Interesting, eh?
But what would Christmas really be... without a little SNOW?
Strange as it may seem, my home country of England has only ever seen seven white Christmases (despite tales by my late grandpa to the contrary!).
And, officially, it's only had two.
You see, the Meteorological Office in London only defines it a white Christmas when one snowflake falls on the roof of London Weather Centre. That happened once in 1938 and once in 1976.
The other five times it must have just missed.
Now, I really must dash...
And so - from the bottom of my heart - allow me wish you a great day tomorrow.
Whether you're celebrating in Santa Claus in Arizona, in Noel in Missouri, or in Christmas in Florida...
Merry Christmas!

A couple of days ago, I attended an evening with the Amazing Bavarian Stompers at Hardwick Hall in Durham. And as the disco played Living on a Prayer, it got me thinking...... At this time of year, the future always seems fresh. It's the end of one long, hard year. It's a time when we put up our feet and relax. A time when we create exciting new plans for how glorious 2007 will be. Maybe you know what I mean.Well, let's fast forward six months. Will you still be feeling quite as excited? Will you still be feeling as content... as wonderful... as eager of the things to come? If you're like most people - including me - then I doubt it. But the real question is: Why not? What if you made a CONSCIOUS DECISION RIGHT NOW to make every day of next year feel as wonderful as this period? Even though life may be busy. And sometimes tough. Maybe you could still inject a little extra happiness, relaxation, ambition and hope into every day of 2007. And just maybe your eyes could sparkle with a little added excitement each and every day. Just to help you along... in the New Year, for one whole year, I'll be posting a little 7-day challenge for you each week. It's up to you whether you accept each challenge. But every suggestion WILL change your life... if only you allow it to. And you know something? I'll follow each and every challenge along with you too. I'll let you know how I get along, if you promise to do the same. Remember: Keep that sparkle bright. And smile! :) It's going to be wonderful. Now, before I go... a couple of snapshots from the evening! Labels: christmas, inspiration, pictures, random acts of kindness
I'm sure that at some young age I actually wanted to be an elf.
But not today, in late 2006.
Still - if you've ever wanted to see me dressed in silky green stockings, doing a festive jig against a seasonal backdrop, then you've come to the right place.
If you're looking for a giggle, click here to view my own personal Christmas dance - especially for you.

And then if you'd like to discover how you can become an elf yourself, visit the aptly-christened Elf Yourself site.

This is the post you knew would be coming.
Because... the season of the soul is upon us.
As I sit here listening to Maria Carey's "All I Want for Christmas", I feel a wave of festive happiness flowing through my body again.
It's the feeling I have whenever I reach the end of the A Christmas Carol (in Muppet, Bill Murray, Alistair Sim, or vanilla flavour). Or when I see my family again after a long journey. Or I view the cathedral in my home town... or new lovers smiling and holding hands...
What do these images invoke in your mind?
And what if you could hold those feelings all year round?
In my blog post today, I'd really like to wish YOU a happy Christmas.
And that comes from a deep place of intense love, with a burst of pleasure and a sparkle of fun. I mean it... I really do.
"Merry, merry Christmas!" I also have a special Christmas card online right now to wish you my best this season...
Click on the link to view the card. You'll enjoy it ;)
And this Christmas, I'd like to ask you just ONE favour...
If you've enjoyed reading my random thoughts over the past few months, please, please -- read or watch "A Christmas Carol" this year. You can buy the book version for just a few pennies these days, or read it online for free.
It's my favourite Christmas story, without question.
If your heart is closed, or you feel unloved, or you don't even feel that Christmas is really "here" yet, then this book will open you up. I guarantee it.
It'll expand your mind -- and you'll feel the love.
Let this blog be your inspiration.
Again... Merry Christmas. Pass it on x
* * * There's magic in the air this evening, magic in the air The world is at her best, you know, when people love and care The promise of excitement is on the night will keep After all, there's only one more sleep till Christmas!
The world has got a smile today, the world has got a glow There's no such thing as strangers when a stranger says hello And everyone is family -- we're having so much fun After all, there's only one more sleep till Christmas!Labels: christmas, films, inspiration, quotes, ramblings
When did you last tell your Dad... "I love you"? Christmas is a time for sharing, for giving, for opening your heart, and embracing positivity. And at the heart of everything is the message: Love. Love everything. Adore todo. And especially family. No matter what you may think about relationships with your folks, with your partner, with your children... the love bond still probably runs deeper than you can possibly imagine. And of course they never understand. And they never appreciate. Certainly not. Tsk. But sometimes you have to take the first step and say... "I love you." Have you done that recently? Here's a little video I stumbled across this morning. And it brought a tear to my eye. Have a look. And open your heart... (E-mail readers : Visit www.karlblog.com to view the video!) Labels: christmas, inspiration, love, videos
I just returned from buying a close friend a couple of birthday gifts.
And as I walked past PC World, a wild version of "Ding Dong Merrily on High!" roared out the loud-speakers. My good friend Richard Asquith sent me a text message at precisely the same time, complaining of a xylophone version of "Frosty the Snowman" playing at the Metro Centre.
And so I stood there and asked myself...
"... Can Christmas come too early?"
Well, possibly.
Certainly, shops filling with silver baubles in September is all a little soon for me.
But how about the SPIRIT of Christmas?
Now THERE'S something which could be savoured all year round.
There's one story I really enjoy listening to. And once every few months, I'll read it again just to remind myself of it's meaning.
And that is... A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens.
It's an old story from 1843, about one rather unusual day in the life of the inimitable Ebeneezer Scrooge. It was written in a very short period of time (if I remember correctly, Dickens needed the cash - fast!), but went on to become one of the most adored Christmas stories in the world.
A testimonial to writing a book quickly if ever I read one.
And it's that story, A Christmas Carol -- whether I'm reading the book, watching Alistair Sim, or crying over the Muppets recreation -- which grounds me once again.
It re-affirms the ideas of feeling great, by having an open-hearted and a love for all mankind.
And, surely, it's never too early to experience that.
Now if you haven't read the book yet, click here and begin. The book reads just like the movie adaptations (yes, including the Muppets!) -- but its medium provides that little extra time to truly digest its meaning.
It might just change your day. Enjoy! :)
(PS. I actually had the privilege of interviewing Lucinda Hawksley, the great-great-great granddaughter of Charles Dickens for Writers FM. She's the only one in the Dickens line currently writing -- and has just finished a book about his daughter. To learn more and download the interview, click here.)Labels: books, christmas, films
