Friday Factoid: They're Acronyms?

Welcome to another Friday(-ish) Factoid!

Today, I'd like to talk about acronyms.

Now, we all know that acronyms are words formed by combining the initial letters (or parts) of several other words.

Perhaps the most common acronym is "USA"... representing the United States of America.

But in today's Friday Factoid, I'd like to share a few common words you may not have even realized were acronyms...

- laser (Lightwave Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation)

- radar (RAdio Detecting And Ranging)

- scuba (Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus)

- sonar (SOund NAvigation Rangin)

- yuppie (Young Urban Professional)

Discover over 4 million others online at http://www.acronymfinder.com/

Happy Friday!

(PS. Share your own factoids at the forum: http://www.karlforum.com/index.php?PHPSESSID=4841ebaf49ad20a0dd605249ae90d5f0&board=7.0 )

Be Psychic

I'm a big multi-tasker.

And a few moments ago, I was doing my usual PC work...

Two dozen windows open. Quickly flicking between browsers until my 8MB broadband connection catches up. Searching. Replying. Downloading.

Then suddenly I thought of an individual whom I'd meant to contact some days ago.

All the information popped right into my mind. From nowhere.

Then my phone rang... and I knew it was Steve.

I knew. Without a shadow of a doubt.

"Of course," as Miss Marple once said, "I don't have any of what you might call 'proof.' But I knew none the less."

It happens to me with relative frequency.

Some years ago, driving with a group from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, a very specific song suddenly clunked into my head out of nowhere.

No idea why or where it came from... and it was mid-song too, which didn't even make sense.

Two seconds later, my friend switch on the radio... and that exact song was playing, and was at the exact same position.

Maybe I was just a little more open to the universal consciousness that envelops everything.

Or maybe this broken clock still shows the right time twice a day.

Either way, psychic phenomenon is interesting.

Here's a site I'd recommend: Be Psychic at www.be-psychic.com.

Visit if you're interested in increasing your "connectedness."

Happy Wednesday! :)

Life, Oh Life!

It's cracking up six days since my last post...

Life has recently taken a few twists and turns for me, meaning I've been unable to post to this blog, or even access a PC, over the past week or so.

But rest assured: I'm always here and thinking of exactly what to ponder about next!

In fact, something curious happened to me just a few moments ago...

Stay tuned for the next post!

Remember, you can also visit www.karlforum.com, where I hope to make my presence known again very shortly.

They're Just Words

It was six years ago.

I was in a tiny little restaurant in London, tucked into a corner, reading through the pages of successful trial lawyer Gerry Spence's book...

"How to Argue & Win Every Time."

It's a great book, incidentally. And it has two sections: arguing professionally, and arguing with friends and family.

Arguing professionally takes up the bulk of the guide. Spence provides techniques on breaking down another person's argument, analytically deconstructing point-by-point... all the stuff that turned him into the brilliant lawyer he is today.

But the second part of the book was the most interesting.

When arguing with family, Spence suggested that the goal should not be to win.

Arguing with someone close to you isn't about winning. It's about restoring that emotional balance.

In such an argument, do you really want to come out and say "HEY! Look at ME! Justice has prevailed! I WON! I'm such a GREAT person that I managed to verbally bash down my loved one!"

In arguments with family, says Spence, the goal is just to be open to the situation -- and, without any of that formal "point-by-point" nonsense, seek to bring balance to your relationship again.

You see...

Words sometimes get in the way.

We argue to balance out our emotions again. We use words to reposition our feelings. We feel bad, so we argue until we believe somebody else sees and accepts our point, then we can feel good again.

As ever, words are the "labels" that are limiting our experience.

So, here's an experiment.

The next time you're in an argument, remember that it's all just WORDS. They're just pointers that help you reposition your feelings.

And knowing that, decide to act ONLY on your actual experience -- how the other person acts -- rather than getting caught up in the verbal story.

I often say: "Don't judge me by what I say I am. Judge me by what I do."

Anyone can talk. Words are cheap. Even these ones.

But actions?

They MEAN something.

And remember: The next time you argue, at least with those you love, you don't have to win to get a successful outcome.

Have a beautiful day! :)

I'm Not the Most Positive Man in the World

Just a quick second post here on this Monday morning...

September 13th was officially "Positive Thinking Day" -- and one of my friends wrote about a contest to find the world's most positive individual:

http://www.selfdevelopmentblog.com/development/2007/08/are-you-most-positive-person-in-world.html

This morning, I learned that I'd been voted for -- and came second in the competition!

That means "officially" I'm the second most positive person in the world :)

But hey...

To paraphrase Homer: "I'm just trying to spread some joy. I'm not running for Jesus!"

:)

I'm also giving away the competition prize to the person that sends the most inspirational personal story to me today (no rules, no limits) ... to karl @ karlmoore.com.

Thank you!

RAK #33: Do What They Can't!

The more random, the better.

That's my motto, at least.

And today's Random Act of Kindness is to do something for someone else that they can't do for themselves!

Yesterday, my Dad took time out of his busy Sunday to visit my new apartment -- and sort out a whole bundle of complex fittings on my "splash and dash" walls.

He came and did a job for me that I really wanted doing... But don't really have the skills to do myself.

So, how could YOU help brighten someone's day?

What job could you do for them that they can't do for themselves?

Could you fix a weak shelf? Build a computer? Proofread an essay? Wash the car? Give a massage?

What skills do YOU have that others could really use?

Even if it's just your COMPANY... such as spending a little time with an elderly neighbour!

Think about it.

And then do it.

(PS. Stop by www.karlforum.com to discover the Random Acts of Kindness board, and share your experience. I haven't been on the forum much recently... sorry, hectic life of late ... I promise I'll be back soon!)

On Positivity

A couple of days ago, I was admitted to hospital for a number of specialised scans.

I was placed on a special x-ray machine and asked to swallow metallic fluids to track my various movements. Yuck!

But the nurse was exceptionally polite. She helped and comforted me every step of the way - even when I almost broke the x-ray machine itself. Oops.

And I let her know what an excellent bedside manner she had!

She was absolutely thrilled. And the doctor, who she warned me was typically very sharp, also really opened up, sensing a friendlier atmosphere.

As we left, she commented: "That's the friendliest I've ever seen him. I don't know what you did. Amazing!"

I didn't do a thing.

There was positivity in the air!

I've written about the power of positivity before. Remember my trip to Richmond in February? A little positive talk ended up wangling me a discounted stay in a booked-up hotel, even though that wasn't my goal!

http://www.karlblog.com/blog/2007/01/power-of-positivity.html

Today, I'd like to share a little story from Keith Ready.

After you've finished reading it, think...

When was the last time YOU were super positive?

Enjoy!

(PS. The Friday Factoid has been suspended this week due to my current hectic schedule. I'll be back next week!)

Just My Job

Recently, a business associate and I went to call on a retail customer, and we experienced one of the real challenges in visiting a very large regional shopping centre that is over 2kms long, with in excess of 300 shops spread over three shopping levels. How do find a store when you haven't been to this shopping centre for some considerable period of time?

Well when we first arrived at the centre and had parked our car, the first thing we did was look for a centre directory or the customer service desk, but without any success. As we weaved our way past a host of customers and shoppers who all seemed to be well aware of where they were going, out of the crowd appeared one of the shopping centre security officers. He was as you may well expect dressed in a black suit, white shirt and dark tie, with the shopping centre logo emblazoned on his jacket. He was holding a two-way radio hand set with an ear piece and remote microphone in his ear, which obviously allowed him to speak to other security officers working in the centre at that time.

Seizing the opportunity to seek some assistance from someone who would no doubt know where the store was located, I approached him and asked for directions. He smiled at us both and indicated that the store was on the next level, only some 75 metres from where we were standing.

Before we could thank him, he added.

'However, please allow me to show where it is.'

We thanked him, but said that there was no need, as we would now be able to find it with the help of his directions. His immediate reply came as a real surprise to us both.

'No not at all, please follow me, it is not very far and it is all just part of my job.'

Almost without realising it, we were walking with him and moved onto the travelator that took us to the next level of the shopping centre and the short walk to store. As we walked, he asked how our day had been and then added that it was a very busy day in the centre, mainly because it was school holidays. When we reached the store, we both thanked him for his courtesy and asked for his name.

He replied with a grin on his face, 'my name is Rob and I suppose you could say that it is not such a great name, given the work that I do here as a security officer.'

We both laughed at his zany sense of humour and once again thanked him for his courtesy and great customer service. As he moved away, he replied for the second time, 'it is a pleasure, all just part of my job.'

The visit to our retail customer lasted about 20 minutes and then we head back towards the car park, only this time we were more certain which way we had to go.

As we walked along the shopping mall level we came across the customer service desk which we could not find on our arrival at the shopping centre, so we stopped to speak to the customer service attendant at the counter. We asked if we could speak to the centre manager and was quizzed in a friendly manner about why we wanted to see him - our answer was that we wanted to give some feedback about a positive customer service experience we had just had. Sadly, the centre manager was not available; however, the customer service attendant suggested we could speak to the duty manager in charge of centre security. So we decided that we would go down to the security office located on the loading dock on the first level of the centre.

On arriving at the security office we were greeted by the duty manager who had a very apprehensive look on his face, which we concluded was due to the fact that when similar contact was made with him by members of the public, it was to lodge a complaint of some sort. When we told him we wanted to give some feedback about a great service experience offered by of one of his team members, his face changed to a positive expression as we went on to praise Rob for making our visit to the centre an enjoyable one. We asked him to pass on our thanks to Rob and make sure that the centre manager was made aware of what he had done for us.

As we left the office and walked back to our car, we both discussed the likelihood that our expression of appreciation would make its way back to Rob and to the centre manager. We agreed that whilst it would have been great if the praise was passed on to Rob we realised that he would have no doubt been the recipient of many other expressions of appreciation from other customers just like us, who had experienced Rob's all part of my job attitude to his work. Whether other people would have taken the time express their appreciation to his boss as we did - is a matter of speculation, the fact that we did express it to Rob and then to his manager, was all that mattered to us at the time.

There is little doubt in my mind that people like Rob don't walk their talk selectively, it just isn't in their nature to be obligingly beyond expectations to one or two people as he did with us and then not do the same with others. I am sure Rob's job as a security officer is full of daily challenges with lot's of not so good things to deal with, so no doubt doing what he did for us and I am certain many others, is more than likely the part of his job that makes his day just that more enjoyable and rewarding.

There can be nothing better in life than to offer caring and genuine service to others and not expect anything in return, however, I am sure that the praise you receive for a job very well done will never go astray - will it!

Share Your Knowledge!

"If you have knowledge, let others light their candles with it."

What a fantastic quote from Winston Churchill.

Each of us has tremendous resources, gained through years of learning and experience. Yet, how many of us realize the potential of what we know in helping others?

So many people belittle themselves, believing that they don't really know enough to offer any advice to others. They underestimate the value of their experience, which is often vast. Yet, every single day, our experiences provide us with more useful knowledge and skills.

Over time, this accumulates and makes us skilful and knowledgeable in many different areas.

Yesterday, one of the readers of this blog sent me a personal e-mail.

She asked me to keep her name private, however she spent 20 years as a full-time mum bringing up her two boys -- and didn't think she had much to offer the outside world.

A friend of hers suggested that she volunteered at a parenting helpline and she was amazed just how much knowledge she had amassed on bringing up children that she could share and offer other parents.

Consider the knowledge that you have amassed over the course of your life so far. I'm confident that it will be more impressive than you first realize.

Then consider how your knowledge might help others!

Enjoy your day :)

Friday Factoid: Beer Heaven!

Welcome to another dose of Friday Factoids, from Karl Blog.com!

And today, I'd like to talk about that beloved drink of summer: the cold beer.

A whopping 69% of men -- and 57% of women -- drink the stuff in the United States. In fact, it's something of a traditional: the oldest recipe in existence is for beer itself.

Back in medieval England, it was routinely served with breakfast. And over in modern day Germany, they serve an ice-cream popsicle made of beer -- though with a slightly less alcoholic content.

But the most interesting revelations come from Denmark.

Scientists in the country found that beer tastes best when drunk to the accompaniment of a certain musical tone. That optimum frequency is, apparently, different for each beer.

Carlsberg Lager, for example, tastes wonderful when listening to a musical tone of between 510 and 520 cycles per second.

The world just gets curioser and curioser...

A VERY HAPPY FRIDAY to you!

Great Wedding Gift Idea!

One of my good friends, Mel McIntyre, is getting married.

He's just sent me an invitation - and his gift list is the most inspirational I've ever seen.

He's not asking for crystal glasses. Or mocha towels. Or an ironing board cover from John Lewis.

His gifts include a mosquito net, a school textbook, a goat, garden seeds, a school desk, and blankets for a starving family.

Every single gift goes to help the less fortunate -- and, wow, what a FANTASTIC way to celebrate!

Mel is genuinely one of the most honest, friendliest and easy-going men I know.

He's written for The Stage, produced a series of GCSE revision books, and just snagged himself a children's book series publishing contract in Canada. You can learn more about him at www.topcopyguy.com.

You don't have to know Mel to donate.

How nice would it be if he receive a dozen special random gifts from the people that read this blog? Just another little Random Act of Kindness?

Here's the link to his "wedding list":

http://www.greatgifts.org/?GiftListID=2528&p=msguests

If you get chance today, make your donation and mention this blog. I'm going to.

You'll bring a smile to Mel's face... to my face... to YOUR face... and to the faces of many people less fortunate in the world.

Thank you :)

The Moment

The point of this blog is to randomly inspire.

There's really no rhyme nor reason. I just throw my thoughts onto the screen and hope that they make a difference to someone, somewhere.

And today, I'd like to chat about living in the moment.

Are you?

Is your mind clearly present and focused on what you're doing right now?

Often, we are too pre-occupied either dwelling on the past or thinking about the future that we forget about what is 'here and now'. And, unless you are in the present moment, you're really not making the most of your experiences.

To experience the magic of the moment, try the following...

Be Mindful - Worrying about what happened in the past or what might happen tomorrow robs you of the present moment. When you feel yourself drifting off to another time, focus your mind on what you are doing right now.

Be Meditative - A great way of being in the moment and enjoying the stillness is through regular meditation. Even ten minutes a day will enable you to switch off from all the clutter.

Be Spontaneous - Yes, make a snap decision and just do it! You don't have to plan every event in your life in minute detail. Give yourself a break ... take a day off and decide where to go in the moment. It'll make life more exciting.

Be Focused - Devote an hour or two to something you thoroughly enjoy such as painting, reading, writing poetry, dance, sport or gardening, etc. Give your favourite pastime your total attention and you'll forget all about time as you enjoy living in the moment.

Naturally, there will be times when you draw upon past experiences and look ahead to your future goals. If kept in perspective, this can be a positive influence on what you're doing right now.

Just remember to keep the balance... and not allow the past, nor the future, spoil the magic of today.

Have a fantastic day!

Fill Your Life with Zest

When you wake up in the morning, are you feeling full of vitality?

Are you charged with positive energy all day long?

If not, then it's time to zest-up your life so that you make the most of every moment.

Becoming energised isn't just about eating nutritiously, exercising regularly and having a balanced lifestyle. Although these are important factors and will have a wonderful effect on your well-being, you can also become energised by starting each day with the right attitude.

By focusing positively on your aspirations and goals, you will see a marked increase in your 'feel-good' thermometer and, with it, a significant improvement in your vitality.

Don't believe me? Well, why not give it a try over the next week or two.

Start your day with positive affirmations, such as "I can achieve my goals" or "I feel amazing" or "I have lots of energy" and so on.

After a short time, you will start to feel a difference.

Remember, what you think becomes your reality.

So make sure you think positive thoughts every single day!

(PS. To learn more about setting your intention each morning, read this post: Intention Sets Direction.)

RAK #32: Save a Spider!

Welcome to another Random Act of Kindness!

And today I'm suggesting you do something that might just be slightly outside your comfort barrier.

Now... If you're anything like me, you won't like spiders.

And let's be honest: I'm not the only one.

YES, admittedly, I have been known to meet the occassionally lost arachnid, randomly patrolling my toilet... who gives me the fright of my life at three in the morning... and then meets his maker a few short seconds later.

But that's not exactly nice, now, is it?

That's why today's RAK is to SAVE a SPIDER, inspired by my animal-loving friend, Rachel.

So...

The next time you get a sudden jump and are about to *splat*... The next time you spy outside your window and see a big black thing crouched in the corner... The next time you gaze idly up at the ceiling and see something out of the ordinary...

Take TWO MINUTES out of your life... to save his life.

Then, read my starfish story -- and feel proud.

Happy Monday!
