There's No Place
Today, I return to my home city of Durham - after weeks of travelling.
I initially visited Frankfurt for filming of The Meta Secret, then to Orlando for meetings with industry experts such as Ed Dale and Dan Raine.
But you know something?
I'm tired, and I'll be thrilled to return home.
To cuddle my dog. To squeeze my nephew. To hug my family.
Freya Stark said: "To awaken quite alone in a strange town is one of the pleasantest sensations in the world."
I disagree.
To awake in your own home, with your own routine, with your own comforts and friends surrounding - that is truly the most pleasant sensation.
Cesare Pavese put it more direct:
"Traveling is a brutality. It forces you to trust strangers and to lose sight of all that familiar comfort of home and friends. You are constantly off balance. Nothing is yours except the essential things - air, sleep, dreams, the sea, the sky - all things tending towards the eternal or what we imagine of it."
Yes, that exploration of the world is a beautiful thing.
But home?
There's truly no place like it.
And if you're not appreciating that today... maybe you should.

Dear Karl, I leave comments every day and most of the time when I try to post them, nothing happens. I will continue until the magic formula operates. You know Karl, I always thought you were a Yank, but in actul fact you live not far fromm me.
I love your blogs and today I like what you say about, "No place like home," but I love Freya Stark's comment, because when I was younger, I was always far from home and the excitement of possibilities in strange places with no judgements from family, friends, relatives was truly liberating. I love being back home now, but would not have missed those days for anything. Love, Liz. P.S. Now to the magic button and find if this is actually posted.

Karl!
I know you probably get a million of these but hey, not necessarily from me! ;-)
Just wanted to say I appreciate your take on life, it mirrors my own many times and gives me food for thought on others....
Welcome Home! As a fellow traveler I know exactly what you mean in your blog today!
Best wishes and light and love!
